How much does a website cost in India? An honest breakdown
Search this and you get price lists from ₹5,000 to ₹5 lakh with no explanation of the gap. Here is what actually drives the number, and the running costs most quotes leave out.
“How much does a website cost” has no single answer, the same way “how much does a vehicle cost” has no single answer — a scooter and a truck are both vehicles. But you can understand what moves the number, and that is enough to judge whether a quote is fair.
What actually drives the price
Four things, in order of impact:
- How many pages, and how custom. A five-page site from a real design costs more than a one-page template, and far more than a page-builder drag-and-drop.
- What it has to do. A brochure site that just informs is one price. Add online payments, bookings, logins or a store and you are paying for software, not pages.
- Who builds it. A freelancer, a small studio and a large agency price the same brief very differently — and so does the level of testing and support behind it.
- What happens after launch. This is the one nobody quotes, and the one that costs people the most. More below.
Rough ranges in India (2026)
Treat these as orientation, not quotes — the spread inside each band is real and depends on everything above:
A proper small-business site (up to ~5 pages) — custom design, mobile-first, contact form, basic SEO setup: mid five figures is common, and worth it over a template that collapses the first time you edit it.
A site with a store or bookings — payments, inventory or a calendar wired in: meaningfully more, because it is software that has to be tested and kept working, not just designed.
A web app or SaaS product — accounts, dashboards, admin: scoped case by case, because “an app” can mean almost anything.
The costs nobody puts in the quote
A website is not a one-time purchase. Every site has running costs, and a quote that hides them is not cheaper, just less honest:
- Domain renewal (yearly)
- Hosting (monthly or yearly)
- SSL certificate (often free, but it has to be kept renewed)
- Maintenance — updates, security patches, backups, fixes
- Content changes as your business changes
The maintenance line is the one that catches people. A site left unmaintained does not stay still — it breaks. We wrote about exactly what breaks in the first year and what a maintenance contract should cover.
Why we do not publish a price
A five-page site for a clinic in Hyderabad and a five-page site for a firm in Berlin are not the same job, and pretending they cost the same means overcharging one and scaring off the other. So we ask what the site needs to do, then give one fixed quote within 24 hours — in your own currency, with the scope and timeline written down. The number you approve is the number you pay. That reasoning is on the pricing page in full.
And because every BuildVaillant build includes a written 365-day year of management, the running costs above are not a surprise line later — they are in the contract from the start.
